TIPPET FAMILY HISTORY

  Written By Bettie Swofford Heatherly

The name Tippet will be found spelled Tippet and Tibbets in part of the history books. One must consider that after the arrival to the colonies it took awhile for schools to be established and once the family entered in the pioneer period there was nearly a whole generation of people who had little formal education.

Uncle Perry  Green states in his biography his Tippet ancestors came from England in 1630. He says that his grandfather, James Alexander Tippet and Ellen Dunnington moved from Va. Into Ky. in about 1839 and lived two years. They moved to Davies co. Mo. Near the little town of Breckenridge.

They lived there the rest of their lives and are buried in Weaver Cemetery , located off of old Hwy. 36 on Turkey Road .

James Alexander must have been an interesting person. He went to the gold rush in California sometime during the year of 1855—being gone in November when his son Coleman Madison was born. I assume he went by wagon train, but decided to come home by ship that took him around South America and back up to Virginia where he visited the folks back home.  There he purchased a horse and returned to Davies Co. Mo. with one dollar in his pocket!!!! This is a story I heard many times and assume it had merit.

I do not know, nor do I have proof that the Shirley Plantation has anything to do with our Tippet lineage, but just a strong feeling. So much of my research has taken me back to this area and the names are intertwined that I felt it good to record what I have here so future generations of genealogist could explore the notion. Today, that is all it is—a belief that the Hills and Tippets and maybe the Carters have close connections.

The Shirley Plantation is the oldest plantation in Virginia. Settled in 1613, so the brochure says, by Sir Thomas West. “The mansion and other buildings were built by Edward Hill III for his daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Carter.” We visited the area  but did not tour the house that is located on the banks of the James River . My interest in this place stems from our William Tippet, born in 1740 in Fauquier Co. Virginia and married Sarah Hill on Jan. 14, 1765 . I have not found more information for her. As is usual for those times, the women’s records get lost.

The Green Family of Arizona, who belong to the Mormon Church believe we are also descendants of Pocahontas through the Tippet line. John Charles Tippet a contemporary  genealogist from CA. says, “James A. Tippet purported he was a direct descendent of Pocahontas.”  I have no further proof. If anyone reading this has any link I would appreciate the information.

In Caldwell Co. information it shows a James A. Tippet was a J. P. who conducted the marriage of Franklin Hettinger to Margaret C. Maupin Feb. 15, 1872 . His office was in Breckenridge, Mo. Also, see the following Parole document.

We visited the home site near Breckenridge, Mo.   The house is no longer there, but the 38 acres is still in the hands of a descendent, Glen Cornelius. As I walked about the home site, I wondered if the body of Ellen Dunnington Tippet still remained there, since that was her first burial site, and she was supposed to have been  moved to Weaver Cemetery later where a stone is place for her.  You see how the mind works when you get the genealogy bug!!!!!  See the Dunnington family for more interesting history of our family

By Bettie Swofford Heatherly

I came across the Will of William Rousseau while we were vacationing in South Carolina in 1996. One afternoon we drove to a library in Conway, S.C.   (My husband says we have visited every library across the United States , I am sure it felt like it to him.). I was searching for the name Payne not aware Rousseau was of interest to me. There I found the Will of William with the mention of Benjamin Payne—my unknown ancestor at the time—-and became so interested in the contents of the Will that I copied it down and read and reread it. I couldn’t stop talking about it. (I believe the book was Wills of Va.)

It was the first time I had ever read of a will where one human being willed another human being to someone else!! I was appalled! At least 15 slaves were willed or as he said lent to his family. Plus their increase!!!  Just like the animals on his plantation!!!  My thoughts were, “How could a Christian man do such a thing?”  Oh, yes, William gave God the glory and honor for his life and possessions and many blessings. I wasn’t too impressed with this man William Rousseau!!

It was several years later to my surprise and with some dismay, I found William Rousseau to be my great-great-great-great-grandpa!!!! I think I would have been happier to have found a horse thief, but there he is a big and bold link in my chain!!! Part of the will is copied here.

1792 Will/Testament of William Rousseau

“In the name of God, Amen, I William Rousseau, of the county of Fauquier Co. Va. being reasonable in health of body and of sound mind and memory, blessed be God for the same and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and that it is appointed for all men to die and being desirous so to order and dispose of what estate God in his mercy hath been pleased to bless me with that no difference may arise thereabout after my decease do make and constitute this my last will and testament in manner and form as following.”.

My note—He goes on to name his wife, Priscilla , son Henry, daughter Margaret Combs and Nancy Peters, son John –who would be going to Georgia, son William and wife Lydda—-and grandsons John Rousseau and William sons of his William; –

He wills slaves to each of the families. Some of the names mentioned are George, an older  negro man James, a boy named Anthony, a boy named Benjamin, another one Jerimaiah, a man named Peter, David, ,Sall , Pleasant  and their increase, Lettice and Sharlott, Neill , Martin and Sharlott, Judith and their increase.(human beings and their families!!!!)

Now he gets to my line——-“It is my will and desire that my son-in-law Benjamin Payne continue in the possession of the negro woman Hannah which I lent to his wife Susannah during his natural life provided he does not move the said negro nor suffer her to be removed out of the county of Fauquier and if he should attempt to do so my will and desire is that my executors shall take possession of the said wench with her increase to dispose of as hereinafter directed————-It is my will and desire that at the end of eight years from the date of these presents that there be an equal division of the increase of said Hannah among my daughter Susannah’s children that each of the said children shall possess and enjoy their division when they come of age  or marry and that if either of them should die before they come of age or marry that in that case the division of said deceased be equally divided among the survivors of them.

(It is my belief that Benjamin Payne,my gr-gr,gr, grandpa. was not a favorite of his father-in-law, William Rousseau)
