Stone Family History

My personal research finds the Stone are from England . The name may have been taken from those who lived near the “Stone Hinge”. We were blessed to visit that awesome place and my imagination could place my Stone ancestors living in the beautiful countryside.

There are great books on Heritage Quest about the Stone families of

Massachusetts . There is also much information about the descendants of Capt. William Stone who came to Va.in 1628 and was governor of Maryland and Lord of Poyntor Manor. These were impressive people, but I would have been much more impressed when I was a young student  had I known that I lived in a County which was named for my gr-gr-gr-  grandfather, William T. Stone. If my mother mentioned this to me, I don’t remember, but I know had it been my father’s ancestor —I would have known all about it. He was very proud of his family and any accomplishment they achieved.  I  guess my mother didn’t think it meant anything to a young person, as I see my own grand children roll their eyes when I “just happen” to mention it.

According to the History of Stone Co. Mo. William T. was born Feb. 25, 1791 in Maryland and moved to Virginia when he was about 17 years old.  I have not found any source who has figured out who his parents were. That is still research that can be done and hopefully one day proof positive will be found.

William T. Stone came into Rutherford Co. Tennessee and married Martha Jane Hailey of

Shelbyville, TN.They first came to Polk co. (now Christian Co.) and shortly after that he “entered upon” government land which was located in Taney Co. Mo.  In 1851 Taney Co. was divided into several portions and the area along the James and White rivers was named in honor of William T. Stone who had died March 31, 1846

. According to the Stone Co. History book, “William was a “man of much importance in his day, well and favorably known throughout the Southwest.” He had not only fought in the War of 1812, but had held offices of trust, being the first representative from county.  He was a successful farmer. This must have carried on through his descendants, because the Stone families of Stone and Barry Co. are good farmers and take part in their local communities.

William and Martha Jane came to the Stone co. area about 1830. Martha’s sister Alcey and her husband, Austin Melton came with them. There are some reports that their mother also came with them . There are Haileys in Douglas Co. Mo. and in Barry Co. Mo. but I can’t connect them directly with our family—–but I suspect we are Cousins.  William and Martha’s  oldest son and my direct ancestor, Elijah, married Martha Jane Mooney on Aug. 24, 1833  by Samuel Martin J.P. certificate #17 Greene Co. Mo.  I have not been able to find her parents but the search is still going on. Elijah was born Feb. 13, 1813 in TN. and died Dec. 3, 1871 . He had enlisted in the Stone co. Mo. Home guard on June. 10, 1861 Co. E. under Capt. Davis.

Lydia L. Stone, daughter of Elijah Stone and Martha Mooney became my great grandmother. She was born July 13, 1841 and died Mar. 19, 1898 in Stone Co. Mo. She married Isham M. Garrison. She and Isham are buried in the McCullough Cemetery in William Twp. east of  Viola, Mo . See the Garrison pages for more about Isham. It is not known where Lydia was during the war, but her husband and sons were fighting and it would have be a very dangerous time and place for a woman living alone. They would have been living near the Missouri and Arkansas line which was a constant moving back and forth for the militias of both Union and Confederate. They had to be on alert for the Bushwhackers who were renegade people who pilfered the country side. They would be among the many pioneer folks who were the original builders of Williams Twp. in south Stone Co. Mo
